Common Ground Alliance is urging contractors to contact 811 before digging, as new survey data shows widespread risk heading into peak project season.

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. homeowners plan outdoor projects involving digging in the next year, but about 10 million say they will not contact 811, the national call-before-you-dig service.

Failing to locate underground utilities can lead to injuries, service disruptions and costly repairs. Lines for gas, electric, water and communications are often buried just inches below the surface, within reach of common tools.

Officials from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said damage prevention starts with contacting 811 before any excavation.

Contractors and homeowners are advised to request utility markings several days before digging and confirm all lines are clearly marked before work begins.
